August 17, 2026

Franklin County on Monday officially was placed under a burn ban by the
Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Emergency Management Agency Director Mark Thornton submitted the
paperwork on Monday, with the ban running through Sept. 15. Due to
extreme drought conditions, everyone is asked to refrain from burning of
any kind.
"We would greatly appreciate your assistance with this problem,"
Thornton said. "Remember, you are responsible for any fire that you
light.
"You can be held accountable for any and all damages on someone
else's property if the fire gets away from you. Liability and criminal
charges are also possible as each one will be investigated by our County
Fire Investigator."
Thornton said burning can wait, and that anyone violating the burn ban
will be written a citation and fined for their actions.
Only county and state officials, along with certified personnel, are
allowed to burn during a ban.
