Brookhaven claws past Lady Dawgs, 11-3
Franklin County High School’s fast-pitch softball end-of-the-season schedule was turned on its ear as a key 7-3A matchup between the Lady Dawgs and Wesson was postponed due to weather.
Monday’s planned non-district contest against South Pike ended up cancelled and FC was slated to face the Lady Cobras on Tuesday, April 18 to wrap up the 2023 campaign.
Results of Tuesday’s game were not available at press time, but will appear in next week’s edition of The Franklin Advocate.
The Lady Dawgs, with a 6-1 mark in regional play, could wind up no worse than a No. 2 seed from District 7 entering the post-season.
Franklin County previously swept district foes Port Gibson, Hazlehurst and Tylertown, and the team’s lone loss, a 21-1 decision, came at the hands of Wesson back on March 9.
FC, with an 11-9 overall record on the season, did get to play on Friday, April 14 and dropped an 11-3 decision to Brookhaven High School.
The Lady Dawgs mustered just three runs on eight hits while committing 10 errors in a non-district, fast-pitch softball showdown against BHS.
Ole Brook’s 11 runs came off, in small part, four hits with the team recording only two errors overall.
FC scored two runs in the bottom of the third and one in the latter half of the sixth inning.
BHS saw one run each in the second and third frames, two in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the seventh.
Two Franklin County players had multiple hits in the contest — Jhalayah Tillman was 2-of-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk and a fly out, and Sadye Scott was 2-of-4 with two singles and flew out and grounded out.
Scott’s courtesy runner, Jessany Harness, crossed home plate once for FC.
Karlee Wallace and Amberly Wallace were both 1-of-3 with a single apiece. The former also hit into a fielder’s choice and flied out while the latter scored one run and grounded out twice.
Marlee Tindle wound up 1-of-2 with a double, was hit by a pitch and struck out once.
Greyonne Queen was 1-of-4 in stroking a bunt single. She also scored a run, struck out once, hit into a fielder’s choice and was involved in a double play by the Brookhaven defense.
Katherine Romero and Indayshia Morgan were both 0-of-3 for the Lady Dawgs.
Romero struck out twice and lined out and Morgan hit into a fielder’s choice, grounded out and reached on an error.
Marianna Thomas finished 0-of-2 with a walk, a ground out and also lined out.
Tillman and Harness both had a stolen base each for FC.
Karlee Wallace and Tillman each took turns in the pitching circle with Wallace going five-and-a-third innings and Tillman spending one-and-two-thirds innings there.
Karlee Wallace was tagged for 10 runs (four of those earned) on one hit with five walks and a strike out.
She faced 35 batters and had a pitch-to-strike ratio of 121-59 (48.7 percent).
Tillman stared down 11 Brookhaven batters and surrendered just one run on three hits with a walk and two strike outs.
Her pitch-to-strike ratio was 45-26 (57.7 percent).
