PEARL — Franklin County High School senior Rebekah Griffin has been selected as STAR student for the 2022-2023 academic year, and will be honored during a gathering planned Thursday, April 13 at the Clyde Muse Center at Hinds Community College.

The STAR — an acronym for Student Teacher Achievement Recognition — program is supported through the Mississippi Economic Council’s M.B. Swayze Foundation.

Started in 1965, the outreach honors students and teachers across the Magnolia State, and Griffin will join other STAR students selected for the honor at the organization’s “Education Celebration” set for next month.

Recognition is based on academic excellence with American College Test results and scholastic averages used to determine each school’s STAR student.

“The STAR program encourages and promotes academic achievement among high school seniors,” Vickie Powell, who serves as senior vice president of the foundation, said.
“Each STAR student is asked to designate a STAR teacher — an individual who has made the greatest contribution to that student’s scholastic achievement.”

Retired Col. Lynn Pippen, who serves as a Franklin County High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps instructor, was chosen by Griffin as her STAR teacher.

More than 600 STAR students and teachers will be recognized at the state-wide celebration.
The top 20 STAR students — who will be named All-STAR Scholars — will receive scholarships and their STAR teachers will receive awards provided by the Kelly Gene Cook Sr., Charitable Foundation.
The highlight of the celebration will be the naming of Mississippi’s top All-STAR Scholar with that individual receiving the coveted $24,000 Cook Foundation Scholarship.

Griffin is the daughter of Tom and Tammy Griffin of Meadville.
