FC golfers finish strong in two events

Franklin County High School’s golf team had two solid showings last week — claiming second place among a five-team field on Wednesday, March 1 and defeating Natchez in a head-to-head nine-hole match on Thursday, March 2.

Wednesday’s event — hosted by Loyd Star and held at Brookhaven Country Club — saw the Bulldogs finish with a team score of 167.

FC’s Kolby Cox set a solid pace with a team-best individual score of 38.

Tim Hutto finished with a 41 and Kyle Walker and Jack Hutto both recorded a 44 to end their day.

Preston Cupit had a 45 for the FC links squad.

“We are improving,” FC Head Golf Coach Jeff Long said after the Wednesday meet. “Our guys are beginning to grind out good scores with more commitment to each stroke.”

In retrospect, Long said Cox’s 38 could have easily been a few strokes better.

“He drove the par-4 ninth hole, but was a little aggressive with his eagle putt, which led to a three putt,” he continued.

“Kolby’s beginning to find his rhythm, and when he putts well, he can shoot under par.”

Loyd Star finished first overall with a team score of 157, and was led by event medalist Brody Thibodeaux, who shot a 37.

The Hornets’ also saw Casen Easterling and Riley Case credited with a 39 each and Caden White wound up with a 42.

Loyd Star’s Kayne Case and Nathan Mills shot a 47 and 48, respectively.

Wesson was third with a 178 team score as Haran Brewer paced the Cobras with a 39 while teammates Justin Haley recorded a 44, Grayson Coates finished with a 47 and Will Loy capped his effort with 48.

Wesson’s Preston Selmon shot a 49 and Aiden Carraway ended with a 51.

Brookhaven claimed fourth place with a 181 team score.

Ole Brook was led by Zach Hirsch’s 41 as Hunter Brewer collected a 44, Brandt Luper completed a 47 and Brooklyn Lee had a 49.

Two other Brookhaven golfers took part — Charlie Adams shot a 50 and Mason Pigott concluded with a 51.

Finishing in fifth place was West Lincoln with Sherman Hyer leading the Bears with a 44. Gabe Gennaro collected a 46 while Ryan Purdy and Luke Gennaro shot a 52 and 53, respectively.

Easton Goodson finished with a 53.

Three golfers from Enterprise also took part with Aiden Bessonette shooting a 42; Jerrod Nations had a 52; and William Madison finished with a 53.

Last Thursday, the Bulldogs traveled to Duncan Park in Adams County to face off against Natchez and topped the host team.

Cox and Tim Hutto shared co-medalist honors with their low scores of 37 each. Jack Hutto finished with a 38, Preston Cupit recorded a 40 and Kyle Walker ended with a 41.

FC’s golfers were slated to play on Tuesday, March 7 against Loyd Star and Brookhaven at Brookhaven Country Club and on Thursday, March 9 at Duncan Park before spring break.
