FC girls earn two more district hoops wins

With a 4-0 mark in District 7-3A hoops action through the end of last week, Franklin County’s varsity girls basketball team has six games remaining in its regional slate before the end of the 2022-2023 basketball season.

The Lady Bulldogs have a 12-6 overall record in their current hoops campaign.

FC 61, HAZLEHURST 33

Franklin County controlled the tempo of its Friday, Jan. 13 showdown against the Hazlehurst Lady Indians from start to finish and claimed a 61-33 victory in Meadville.

The Lady Dawgs opened strong with a 21-7 first-quarter scoring run with the Lady Indians outgaining FC, 8-6, in the second frame.

After halftime, Franklin County overran Hazlehurst, 17-10, in the third and outscored the visitors, 17-8, in the fourth quarter.

Three FC players scored in double figures with DeAsia Buie and Harmoni Porter chipping in 15 each and Niyla Wright adding 13.

Ja’Kya Brown finished with nine points while Arya Williams tacked on five and Da’Shara Hannon and Teearlynn Faust contributed two apiece.

The Lady Dawgs were 10-of-18 from the free throw line with Brown hitting 3-of-4, Porter and Buie draining 3-of-6 each and Wright sinking 1-of-2.

FC 54, WESSON 36

The Lady Bulldogs downed the Wesson Lady Cobras, 54-36, on Tuesday, Jan. 10 with the home team winning three of the four quarters of action.

FC’s offense went on runs of 18-11 in the first quarter, 18-8 in the second frame and 11-9 in the third before Wesson charged back to outscore the Lady Dawgs, 8-7, in the final eight minutes of the game.

Brown was Franklin County’s scoring leader with 18 points, which included 14 points before the mid-game break.

Buie had 15 points against Wesson and Porter wound up with 11 points while Wright had seven, Faust tacked on two and Kennedy Washington scored one.

From the charity stripe, Franklin County went 8-of-18 against the Lady Cobras with Buie going 3-of-5 while Wright and Washington shot 50 percent — the former was 3-of-6 and the latter was 1-of-2.

Brown was 1-of-4 in the contest in free throws.
