Lady Dawgs split hoops decisions
The Franklin County High School varsity girls basketball team cruised to a 50-39 win over McComb last week, but came up short in a 58-40 loss to Brookhaven.
BROOKHAVEN 58, FC 40
FC held a 26-14 lead over Ole Brook in the first half of the contest, but fate intervened and deflated the Lady Bulldogs in the second half.
Franklin County standout JaSharreah Hunt was disqualified on an official’s call in the third quarter of the Friday, Dec. 3 contest at home.
“The call seemed to just let the air out of our tires,” FCHS Head Basketball Coach Rickey O’Quinn said after the game. “We never really seemed to find a rhythm after that and struggled down the stretch.”
From there, Brookhaven went on a 25-7 run in the third frame and a 19-7 tear in the final eight minutes of the game to take the win.
Despite the ejection, Hunt still paced the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points while teammate JaKya Brown chipped in 11 for the cause.
Niyla Wright ended the night with nine points for FC while Madison Sparkman added five and Harmoni Porter contributed three.
The Lady Dawgs shot 13-of-31 from the free throw line in the game.
FC 50, McCOMB 39
Franklin County set the tempo early in the 50-39 win over the visiting Lady Tigers on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored McComb 12-9 in the first quarter and 15-11 in the second frame to take a 27-20 lead into the locker room at intermission.
FC continued to keep the pressure on McComb by going on a 10-8 run in the third and a 13-11 offensive burst in the fourth.
Brown led the way with 17 points for the Lady Dawgs — hitting 6-of-10 two-point attempts and draining 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Hunt was also in double figures with 14 points after hitting 3-of-7 two pointers and 2-of-6 from beyond the arch.
Wright added to the winning effort with six points while Porter contributed five and Rylei Turner and DeAsia Buie added four apiece.
Turner battled the boards throughout the night in pulling down a team-high nine rebounds — two offensive and seven defensive — for FC.
Hunt and Wright both had six rebounds apiece with four and three on defense, respectively, for the duo.
Turner led in assists with three and Brown had a team-high four steals for the Lady Bulldogs.
Franklin County’s varsity girls hoops program has a 6-2 record on the season.
