Franklin County High School’s girls varsity basketball program collected two wins prior to the Thanksgiving holiday by knocking off the Tylertown Lady Chiefs, 50-42, at home on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and Loyd Star’s Lady Hornets, 46-36, on the road Thursday, Nov. 17.

The victories boosted the Lady Dawgs to a 4-2 record overall.

Momentum swings dominated the course of the contest early as Franklin County went on a 14-2 tear through the first quarter with Tylertown bouncing back for a 19-7 second-quarter spurt.

In the first frame, FC’s Ja’Kya Brown, DeAsia Buie, Harmoni Porter and Niyla Wright each had a two-pointer with Brown sinking 4-of-4 from the charity stripe while Wright went 2-of-4.

Wright went on to score four — a field goal and two free throws — before intermission and Brown added a field goal and went 1-of-2 from the line to help keep the Lady Dawgs on top at the mid-game break, 24-21.

FC came out of the locker room to outscore the Lady Chiefs 14-10 in the third quarter and 15-11 in the fourth period.

Porter had the hot hand in the third with a pair of three-pointers and a field goal while Buie hit a trio of two-pointers.

The final quarter of action saw Buie add three more field goals for the home team while Kennedy Washington chipped in dual two-pointers with Brown and Teearlynn Faust each adding a field goal.

Brown also went 1-of-2 from the line.

Three Franklin County players finished in double figures on the scoring sheet with Buie having a team-high 14 points, Brown contributed 12 and Porter tacked on 10.

Wright ended her night with eight points, Washington recorded four and Faust finished with two.

FC was 10-of-14 (71.4 percent) from the free throw line against the Lady Chiefs.

FC 46, LOYD STAR 36

Brown showed up and showed out thanks to a season-high 25 points for the Lady Dawgs in their win over the Lady Hornets.

She scored in every quarter — three in the first, six in the second and eight each in the third and fourth frames while draining 11-of-16 from the free throw line.

Franklin County overran Loyd Star 11-4 in the initial frame and outscored the Lady Hornets 10-8 and 10-7 in the second and third periods, respectively.

Loyd Star mounted a late comeback bid with a 13-12 run in the final eight minutes of the contest, but that proved to be insufficient in overcoming the Lady Dawgs’ established lead.

FC’s Buie contributed nine points in the victory with three two-pointers and a 3-of-4 showing at the charity stripe.

Wright had a pair of two-pointers in the first half to wind up with four in the game as Porter drained a two-pointer in the first quarter and went 1-of-4 from the line.

Washington recorded a two pointer early for the Lady Dawgs.

As a whole, FC was 15-of-32 (46.8 percent) in its free throw shooting against the Lady Hornets.
