FC hoops teams split on road against Bears
Franklin County’s varsity basketball teams wound up splitting regular season opening decisions on the road Saturday, Oct. 29 with the Lady Bulldogs falling to West Lincoln, 51-33, and the Bulldogs strolling past the Bears, 67-23
In girls’ competition, FC jumped out to a 10-7 lead over the Lady Bears in the first quarter as DeAsia Buie sunk two buckets and Niyla Wright added another while Ja’Kya Brown and Harmoni Porter both drained a pair of free throws.
West Lincoln took control of the contest in the second frame by outscoring Franklin County, 16-11.
Porter hit a three pointer, Wright had a field goal and Brown went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe for the Lady Bulldogs before intermission.
The Lady Bears outpaced FC 13-2 in the third quarter and 15-10 in the fourth quarter to take the victory.
Franklin County’s lone two-point bucket came from Teearlynn Faust in the third quarter while Brown had a trio of two pointers and went 2-of-5 from the line in the final frame.
Brown paced the Lady Dawgs, who are 0-1 on the 2022-2023 hoops season, with 16 total points, including a 10-for-17 effort from the free throw line.
Porter finished with five points on the night while Wright and Buie recorded four apiece.
In boys’ action, the Bulldogs outscored West Lincoln in every quarter of play — 22-4, 25-7, 10-4 and 10-8.
The first quarter saw Kentrez Bonds pace Franklin County with seven points while Michael Covington chipped in six, Derrick Wilson added five and Daylen Thomas scored four.
Bonds continued to have the hot hand in the second quarter thanks to another seven points, which included a successful shot from outside the three-point arch.
Others contributing to the run before halftime included Covington and Derrick with five points apiece; Kepatrick Nimox and Jamie Green with three each; and Thomas with two.
With a 47-7 lead coming out of the mid-game break, FC substituted liberally down the stretch.
In the third frame, the Dawgs were paced by Wilson with four points as Bonds, Covington and Thomas tacked on two each.
Donovan Wilson and Eddie O’Quinn drained three pointers in the fourth quarter while Tyler Walton had a pair of field goals.
As a whole, FC was 6-for-14 from the charity stripe against West Lincoln with Bonds going 1-for-1 with Nimox draining 1-for-2 and Thomas finishing 2-for-4 from the line.
Covington had a 2-for-5 night from the line.
When the dust settled, three players had finished in double figures on the tally sheet as Bonds led the way with 16, Derrick Wilson contributed 14 and Covington wound up with 13.

UPCOMING GAMES
Franklin County was slated to face off against Amite County on Tuesday, Nov. 1, but results of those contests were not available at press time.
On Thursday, Nov. 4, FC was scheduled to travel to North Pike for games starting at 6 p.m., and will play the rubber match in that series beginning at 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 11 in Meadville.
The hoops squads will travel to Loyd Star on Thursday, Nov. 17 — their final outing before the Thanksgiving holiday.
