Co-Lin rolls past Trojans, 37-7, on road
MOORHEAD — The Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves overcame a shaky start on the road and dominated the second half to earn a 37-7 gridiron win over Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday, Sept. 8.
The Trojans opened the game by completing eight-of-nine pass attempts on a 71-yard touchdown drive to take a 7-0 lead.
The Wolves responded on their opening possession with an 11 play, 70-yard scoring drive capped by with a 28-yard field goal by freshman kicker Corey Case to make the score 7-3 with 5:36 left in the first quarter.
The score was unchanged until midway through the second quarter when sophomore quarterback DeVon Tott connected with freshman receiver Antrelle Sims on a 21-yard catch and run for a touchdown.
The successful point-after try by Case gave the Wolves a 10-7 lead with 4:59 remaining in first half.
Co-Lin looked to extend its lead at the end of the half with a field goal, but the Trojans blocked the attempt.
The Wolves got their 27-point second half started early in the third quarter as Tott completed a screen pass to freshman running back Johnnie Daniels, who scored from 28 yards out.
A successful PAT increased the Wolves’ lead to 17-7 with 8:56 remaining in the quarter.
The Wolf Pack defense forced a fumble on the ensuing drive by the Trojans and recovered the ball on the Delta 25-yard line.
Kyjuan Herndon rushed the ball three times and scored on the final carry from 10 yards out.
The Wolves missed the PAT, but the lead stood at 23-7 with 7:09 left in the third frame.
The final two touchdowns for Co-Lin came in the fourth quarter — the first on a 32-yard rush by sophomore running back Antonio Luckett and the latter as Herndon scored his second touchdown on an eight-yard rush.
Both PATs were good to set the final margin of victory for Co-Lin at 37-7.
Tott completed 20-of-38 pass attempts for 217 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Herndon led the rushing attack with 92 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns while Daniels added 73 yards on 11 carries.
Luckett had 64 yards on six carries with one score.
The Wolves had nine different players with a pass reception. Sophomore receiver Tyquan Henderson gained 63 yards on five receptions and Daniels added 38 yards on two receptions with a score.
Sims had three receptions for 35 yards with a touchdown and Jaylen Smith recorded 21 yards on three receptions.
Sophomore receiver Jerrick Wooten and freshman receiver Carlos Martin had two receptions each.
Luckett, sophomore receiver James Singleton Jr., and freshman receiver O’Ryan James added one reception apiece.
Sophomore linebacker Ja’Len Sims led the Wolves’ defense with 10 tackles, two sacks, two-and-a-half tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Sophomore defensive lineman Kadarius Miller recorded nine tackles and a fumble recovery.
Freshman defensive back Kaden Dukes claimed six total tackles while sophomore defensive back Ques McNeal, sophomore linebackers Jamal Pye and Nate White and freshman defensive back Andrew Johnson added five tackles each.
McNeal had a pass breakup, White collected two sacks and a forced fumble and Pye also recorded a forced fumble.
Freshman defensive back Davion Roby had two pass breakups while freshman defensive back Navarion Benson accounted for a fumble recovery and a pass breakup.
Co-Lin is now 1-1 overall on the season and will host its home opener, which also starts South Division play, against No. 9-ranked Jones College of Ellisville.
Kickoff between the Wolves and the Bobcats is set for 6:30 p.m., at Stone Stadium in Wesson.
