FC soccer knots Lawrence County, 1-all; blanks Hattiesburg, 3-0, on road

Franklin County High School’s Soccer Dawgs picked up tie and a win last week prior to its Thanksgiving break from action and now sport a 2-2-3 record in the early going of their 2021-2022 season.

Against Lawrence County, FC scored a second-half goal and played to a 1-all stalemate in the contest played at home.

In total, Franklin County recorded 31 shots with 19 shots on goal.

Nathan Griffin, who had five of his team’s shots on goal, scored the Soccer Dawgs’ lone point on a header into the net thanks to a corner kick from Landon Furlow.

Furlow, who was credited with the assist, also had five shots on goal for FC against Lawrence County.

Defensively, Kennon Johnson had 13 stops while Zachary Kent added 11 in the outing. Colton Shaw and Terrence Fields finished with nine stops apiece with Ethan Touchstone and Furlow collecting eight each.

Keyundre Felton, in his role as keeper, had two saves including a lone stop late that helped preserve the tie.

FC 3, HATTIESBURG 0

The Soccer Dawgs claimed a 3-0 shut-out win over Hattiesburg High School on Tuesday, Dec. 9 — with two of those goals coming before intermission.

Griffin, Furlow and Jamari Tolliver scored in the contest with Fields and Kent both credited with assists.

FC had 24 shots against the Tigers with 10 shots on goal in the 80 minutes of regulation.

Kent was the defensive sparkplug for Franklin County with 11 stops while Shaw, Johnson and Fields added nine each.

Touchstone finished with seven defensive stops.

Felton went the distance in front of the net and earned eight saves while getting the shut-out victory.

LOYD STAR TOURNEY

FC 0, CATHEDRAL 0

FC 1, BROOKHAVEN 1

The Soccer Dawgs finished with a pair of ties in the Loyd Star Tournament played at Brookhaven on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Against Cathedral, the two teams played to a scoreless deadlock with Franklin County collecting 24 total shots with 10 shots on goal.

Kent and Shaw both led FC with nine defensive stops each as Johnson contributed eight and Fields added six against Cathedral.

Goalkeeper Dakota Chisholm earned four saves.

FC opened tourney play with a 1-1 tie with Brookhaven.

The Dawgs, who finished with 11 shots on goal, trailed until Tolliver recorded a key second-half goal on an assist by Furlow.

Kent, Shaw, Johnson and Field all accounted for eight defensive stops. Touchstone ended the game with seven stops to his credit.

Felton went the distance in front of the net and had five saves for FC.

RICHLAND 5, FC 0

On Thursday, Nov. 4, Richland scored twice in the first half and three more after the mid-game break to claim a 5-0 win over Franklin County.

The Soccer Dawgs were limited to three total shots and two shots on goal in the road outing.

Kent led the way for the FC defense thanks to 13 stops with 10 more added by Shaw. Touchstone and Johnson wound up with nine stops apiece and Fields finished with eight.

Chisholm took the loss as keeper with five surrendered goals, but had 11 saves in the contest.

UPCOMING GAMES

The Franklin County Soccer Dawgs are next scheduled to play on Monday, Nov. 29 in a district contest against Hazlehurst.

The game is slated to start at 6:15 p.m., at the Dawg House across from the FC elementary schools.

Franklin County will travel to battle North Pike on Tuesday, Nov. 30 with JV boys to play at 5 p.m., and varsity boys action starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Dawgs are slated to welcome Terry here at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2.

FC will then play at Brookhaven on Tuesday, Dec. 7 with a JV boys contest set for 5 p.m., and varsity boys taking the field at 7:30 p.m.

The boys teams will host Wesson in another district outing on Thursday, Dec. 9 with JV boys action at 5 p.m. and varsity boys starting at 7:15 p.m.
