Wintry weather closes schools; various services cancelled
January 24, 2026
The Franklin County School District announced on Saturday that all schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the threat of ice on the roadways.
Officials made the decision in order to keep buses and children off roadways that could be icy, especially in the morning hours, as the large winter storm makes its way across the area.
A decision about reopening schools on Wednesday will be made midday Tuesday.
In addition to schools closing, many churches have announced on social media that Sunday services have been cancelled due to the wintry mix expected today and tomorrow. Those churches include: Maple Presbyterian Church, Sarepta Baptist Church, New Hope Baptist Church and Elmo Baptist Church.
The list of closures will be updated as information becomes available.
Residents are being urged to limit travel as much as possible as the storm makes its way through the area. Remember that bridges ice before roadways, so be particularly careful on those overpasses.
Residents are also urged to check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have everything they need during the storm, especially in the areas of warmth and necessary supplies and medications.
