Library announces June programs slate

The Franklin County Public Library will host a presentation on the Mississippi Library Commission’s “Talking Book Service” beginning at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 16.

MLC representative Mary Rodgers Beal will present information regarding the service, which is free and available to eligible Franklin County residents unable to read standard print due to a visual, physical reading disability.

The service also assists institutions that serve these individuals with visual impairments.

Also in June, the library will hold its weekly “Summer Reading” activities beginning at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 8.

An hour-long program will take place each Wednesday at that same time throughout the month and will feature events such as ocean-themed bingo, a visit by Franklin County’s District 5 Fire Rescue team, knot-tying lessons and other fun-filled activities.

“The summer library program is open to children through age 19,” FCPL Librarian Susan Adams said. “(The goal is to) read or listen to at least five easy-juvenile nonfiction books or 60 minutes of a chapter book every week for teens ages 12 and up. Children may read any books on their reading level. Those who are not yet reading independently may be read to by another reader.

“Children who read more than five books or for more than 60 minutes will receive a special prize. Children are not required to attend the weekly programs in order to participate in the summer program.”

Registration for the program is now open.

“Grab-and-Go” packets will also be available each week for the duration of the summer outreach.

Additionally, a storytime for children from birth through age 10 will be held on Tuesdays in June starting at 10 a.m., on June 7.

On Tuesday, June 14, a Flag Day presentation will take place at 10 a.m., along with the scheduled storytime and a craft.

On Tuesday, June 28, Cynthia Wilkinson from Franklin County’s Mississippi State University Extension office will teach the children about pollution.
