Funeral services for Mattie Morese Bowlin, 88, of Smithdale, were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Smithdale with the Rev. Eric Moak, Dr. John Moody and the Rev. Ted Bowlin officiating.
Interment was in the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery in McCall Creek.
Visitation was held from 10 a.m., until the time of services on Tuesday, April 12 at the church.
She was born to Jessie Eugene and Arie Dell Westbrook McGehee on Sept. 10, 1933, in Amite County, and passed away Saturday, April 9, 2022, at her residence while surrounded by her loved ones.
She was a retired hairdresser having worked over 25 years in the industry, and was a member of Mount Olive Baptist church.
Mrs. Bowlin had a servant’s heart for her Lord and her family — always putting them first in her life and leaving a legacy of love and compassion behind.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and enjoyed her flower beds, decorating cakes and loved to host family events.
She had a great sense of humor and was a “cookie-making grandma.”
Mrs. Bowlin loved Jesus fiercely and taught her family those values.
She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Sammy Bowlin; her infant brother, J.E. McGehee; her brother, M.H. McGehee; her two sisters, Florene Seale and Pearl Wells; and a brother in-law, Donald Wells.
Survivors include her husband of 70 happy years, James Pearlie “J.P.” Bowlin; her daughter, Beckie Moody (John) of McKinney, Texas; her daughter in-law, Dorcus Bowlin; her three grandchildren, Ashley Hardin (Wes), Nicole Bowlin (fiancé Judd Blades) and Marvin Cortez Bowlin; her seven great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Seth, Rosalyn, Warren, Jace, Avery and Connor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Cortez Bowlin, Steve Bowlin, Nathan Wells, Jasper Seale, Jimmy McGehee and Wes Arnold.
Honorary pallbearers were Jace McAllister, Seth Blades, Warren Blades and Connor James Hardin.
