BROOKHAVEN — Franklin County High School’s golf team claimed a second-place finish in a four-team links competition held on Thursday, Feb. 24.

Sophomore Kolby Cox won medalist honors for shooting a low nine-hole score of 37 in the event held at The Golf Club of Ole Brook.

Cox’s Bulldog teammates Jack Hutto shot a 44, Preston Cupit recorded a 47 and Kyle Walker finished with a 48 for a team score of 176.

Loyd Star, the defending Class 2A state golf champion, finished atop the leader board with a team score of 171 while Brookhaven wound up third with a 177 finish and North Pike was fourth with a 186 tally.

“It was a good start to the season for us,” FCHS Golf Coach Jeff Long said following the competition.

“We are still a very young team, but I thought the guys handled the conditions pretty well — considering how the wind was blowing and the greens were extremely fast.”

Long said his 2022 FC squad includes five sophomores — Cox, Walker, Parker Jordan, Zachary Kent and Drew Berryhill — along with a pair of freshmen, Jack and Tim Hutto.

The team also includes a pair of eighth graders — Preston Cupit and Parker Cupit.
