FC basketball in cruise control
Franklin County High School’s varsity basketball teams continued their hot streak on Friday, Jan. 28 at home with the Lady Bulldogs knocking off Wesson, 59-35, and the Bulldogs rolling to a 76-35 finish over the visiting Cobras.
FC GIRLS 59, WESSON 35
Franklin County stayed firmly in control of this contest from the initial tipoff with the Lady Dawgs outscoring Wesson 13-6 in the first quarter, 16-4 in the third frame and 19-14 in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Both teams battled to an 11-all tie in the second quarter.
Three Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures during the affair — JaKya Brown led with 18 (including a pair of three pointers), Harmoni Porter had 12 (with two of those being treys) and Niyla Wright finished with 10.
Brown, Porter and Wright accounted for all 24 of Franklin County’s first-half points against Wesson.
In the second half and with liberal substitutions by the Lady Bulldogs, others got into the scoring mix with Ja’Sharreah Hunt contributing eight (one three-pointer), Rylei Turner added five (one three-pointer) and Arya Williams and Shamara Stewart each wound up with three point shots from outside the arch.
FC was 7-of-11 from the free throw line with Brown hitting 6-of-9 and Hunt sinking 1-of-2.
This marked the second win over Wesson by the Lady Bulldogs during the current hoops season.
On the road, FC previously defeated the Lady Cobras, 58-40, on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
Franklin County’s varsity girls are 17-4 on the 2021-2022 basketball season and 8-0 in 7-3A district competition.

FC BOYS 76, WESSON 35
The FCHS Bulldogs made a statement early against Wesson — outscoring the Cobras by a 20-2 margin in the first quarter and never looking back down the stretch.
FC went on runs of 21-11 in the second frame, 16-10 in the third and 19-12 in the fourth to seal the 76-35 win.
Kobe Marshall had a superb night by accounting for 20 of the Dawgs’ points — as he dropped five three-pointers in the first half.
Caleibria McDonald contributed 11 points for FC with a trey to his credit and Daylen Thomas finished with 10.
As was the case in the varsity girls’ game, FC Head Basketball Coach Rickey O’Quinn cleared the benches, and that allowed a host of Bulldogs to get into the scoring frenzy.
Michael Covington scored eight for the home team while Kentrez Bonds added six and Bradley Washington, Jailen Hunt and Amarion Wilson tacked on four apiece.
Craig Jackson chipped in three with Kepatrick Nimox and Derrick Wilson sinking buckets for two points each.
The Dawgs went 9-of-16 from the charity stripe with McDonald sinking 2-of-3; Thomas and Bonds draining 2-of-2; Marshall hitting 1-of-2; and Covington connecting on 2-of-4.
FC’s varsity boys are 17-4 on the season with the win and improved to 7-1 in 7-3A regional play.
